alan lomax recordings for the library of congress haiti 1936/1937

woah.    when i read/heard about this i couldn’t wait……and after what seems like 2 months, and it may have been that long, i finally received it on wednesday.   today is the first day that i’ve had a chance to listen to it…….new years party to prepare for/actual party/serious hangover & work on saturday prevented any serious listening.    and even today, i haven’t listened to that much of it… is, after all, over 10 hours of music.

made on his trip to haiti in 1936/1937 it sat without release until now, due to sound limitations, only recently has technology been able to correct the poor sound quality of the metal discs used to make these field recordings.   i must note, however, my disappointment with the packaging.   the design was billed as a nod to the great box set work of dust to digital & revenant, but i have to say that it falls quite short of those companies fine work……..i opened mine up only to find that the inside was ripped apart due to bad design, and i’ve since heard from others that the same thing occured with theirs as well.

i will spend more time with the music & the two books over the next week as time permits……probably play a bunch of it on this weeks installment of the five & dime show….tune in if you please.
